Alexander's POV.
Walking through the streets, I looked everywhere, but no one was there. My chest tightened as I breathed to control my raging breath. The road seems so still; darkness spread everywhere, making the road more haunting than it already was.
My hand reached into my pocket, shoved my hand in, and took out my lighter. It was looking more like a fire torch
I pushed the button and turned it on. The golden flame illuminated by the torch looked fascinating; fire always excites me, whereas darkness has haunted me. The golden flame helped us to move further. Thunderstorm strikes all over the sky,
my heart twisted as I witnessed it with my bare eyes.
My stomach churned with hunger, but I knew right now my priority was something else.
I felt a hand brush against mine, and I spun my head to look at him.
"Alex... I'm feeling hungry!" my fourteen-year-old brother Ryan started for the fifth time and I felt helpless. In the middle of the night, we were strolling through the dark passage of the New York streets with empty pockets and stomachs.
I looked at him, licking my dry lips, "Some more time, Ryan. And everything will be all right, "
"Promise?" I nodded and he hugged me tight.
After walking for a handful of minutes we finally reached the place I was destined. The abandoned street was crowded with people hooting and shouting for the two boxers that were looking so muscular and strong trying to beat the shit out of each other.
I do not have much experience with boxing. Little did I learn from my father and see him practicing, but I know it's not enough. But right now nothing was more important than Ryan at that moment, who was hungry for the whole day, and I wasn't ready to go back to my old life to that wicked woman who was being called our stepmother.
The hooting and cheering of the crowd brought me back to reality.
"Alex, why are we here?" Ryan asked innocently, and I smiled at him, "You want food, right?" He nodded and I kept my hand on his shoulder, "I'll give you everything you deserve."
His smile deepened, eyes sparkled with joy. I looked at the person who was busy collecting money.
I walked in his direction, and he raised his head and looked at me, "What do you want, kid?" He scoffed as he thought I was one of the spectators present here.
"I want to fight!" I told him. My voice came out loud, and everyone around me stopped talking and looked at me as if I was talking in some foreign language or I was alien.
They all looked at me with shock, mockery, and pity. Mixed emotions can be seen on everyone's face.
He ran his eyes all over me, looking at my lean frame he asked, "What's your age?"
I didn't have enough muscles like any of those in the ring present here, but I'm sure about one thing: Ryan and I are both hungry and if I didn't do this, I'd probably rot and die in the streets, which wasn't in my plan.
"Eighteen." My voice came out confident. He looked at someone in the crowd, and his eyes were looking at me as he gave a nod to the one standing in front of me collecting the cash.
"Name?" He raised his eyebrows and I immediately replied without any hesitation, "Alexander."
A smirk made its way to his lips as he heard me, "Are you sure? You can die there." He pointed towards the ring, and I nodded, well aware of my words.
"So who's challenging Alexander." He asked looking at the crowd, and all I heard was people mocking and laughing.
My eyes couldn't help but stop at the one who just won the match. He looks like a good luck to me. He's already very confident all I have to do is knock him down. And prove to everyone that I'm not someone they can laugh at.
"I challenge you!" I pointed toward the guy everyone was cheering. Liam can be heard all over the crowd and his smile faded. And everyone stopped when they heard me. His expression changed in a second; he looked at me as if I was some piece of dirt and had no audacity to say that.
"Listen, kid, I don't want to kill you here on the street, so back off." He sounded annoyed with my proposal feeling so proud of himself.
I glanced at Ryan, who looked terrified, and then at him. Going towards the ring and entering inside I looked at that guy he knocked ten minutes ago.
"Are you afraid?" That fueled his anger and he looked furious.
Without wasting any time, he came inside the ring, "Remember you asked for this; be ready to be my punching bag," I smirked, and we began. It was six rounds, three minutes each.
In the beginning, he tried to jab in the face but I was fortunate enough to dodge it and punched his Adams apple. I tried to punch as hard as possible, and it worked as he gagged and coughed.
Without giving him any time for recovery, I gave a power punch just below his chest, making him hiss in pain. Call it my luck but I was fortunate enough to use my best moves on him.
Everyone stopped. The crowd, who had been cheering till now looked shocked when he got back-to-back punches. An immense amount of satisfaction settled inside me, and I heard my name, "Alex, go for it." Ryan cheered happily and I was taken aback when he punched my ribs.
I was pulled back and saw Ryan's expression; the happiness was replaced with worry and concern.
Without wasting any minute I punched his face and gave him a black eye. I again punched him in the stomach and we stopped when the round ended with a whistle.
I heaved and looked at Ryan; he came closer and asked, "Are you okay, Alex?"
"Yes."
His eyes relaxed a little, and once again, another round started. I don't want to waste time. Deciding and looking at the weaker parts of his body I've decided to end it soon.
I fisted and jabbed at the side of his neck; again, I punched his jaw, almost breaking it, and then punched his chin, damaging his jaw more.
Blood splattered all over as he coughed.
He fell on the floor looking unconscious as his eyes began to close. He was checked and the match ended as he declared Liam had a technical knockout.
Everyone looked at me in surprise, but I heard Ryan's voice ripping the silence, "Well done, Alex." He shouted in excitement, and cheers, followed by his voice; I heard the crowd cheering my name.
Everyone there looked at me surprised. The person came forward and handed me a bundle of notes that we craved.
"The next match is in a week!" He informed me and a satisfactory grin made its way to my lips.
"I'm Carlos." We shook hands and I replied, "I'll be there!"
Looking at the bundle of notes I felt so satisfied. I gave it to Ryan and his lips curved in a smile.
"Are you happy?"
"Of course."
I smiled, and he shoved it inside my pocket and we began to go back to the route where we came from.
That day one thing was sure in my head that I'd stepped into a world from where there is no coming back. And to be honest I feel this world suits me well far better than the one I've left behind.
